Example Domains

How IANA-maintained example domains such as example.com and example.org may be used in documentation, and what they are not for.

Using example domains in documentation

A number of domains such as example.com and example.org are maintained for documentation purposes. These domains may be used as illustrative examples in documents without prior coordination with IANA. They are not available for registration or transfer.

Web service on the example hosts

IANA provides a web service on the example domain hosts to give basic information about the purpose of the domain.

These web services are provided on a best-effort basis and are not designed to support production applications. IANA strongly recommends that you do not design applications that require the example domains to have operating HTTP service.
